Oracle VM - What are the best practices for guest domain root disk

I have gone back and forth on how best to setup guest domains with regard to assignment of root disks and utilization of zpools or SAN LUNs.

In some cases, I have created a LUN on our SAN, shared this with the control domain and then made the entire LUN the root disk for the guest domain.

In other cases I have a created a zpool in the control domain and then added this as the root disk for the guest domain.

What are the merits of each method and which is the recommended approach?
