Opportunity Contact and workflow

I have a need to test if an Opportunity has a Contact.  The workflow does X if a Contact is present and does Y if no Contact is present.  When a Contact is added, the workflow needs to do X.  If the Contact is removed, the workflow needs to do Z.  I recall that this isn't a matter of testing for <KeyContactId> IS NOT NULL.  There is a rather unusual WF test expression.  Does anybody recall this?
