Question regarding patching frequency

 Our company is about to implement EBS. I am very new to this EBS thing. Since I am going to take on Application DBA role soon, I want to know how often does people do patching for EBS? It's not like every time you change a parameter you have to patch, right? Also, if developer does customization later, will patch wipe out all the changes? How to preserve those changes after patch? Experts please advice. Thank you very much.
