Wrong default value appearing in new field

I added the rating field to my Lead Page Layout.  I set the field up so that when a NEW lead is created the default value would be N (New, not yet rated). This works fine, but all of my existing leads now show a rating of A, which is not what I want. I would prefer they also default to N, or that nothing at all appears in the lead rating field.

Suggestions? The pick list starts with N, then shows A, B, and C in that order.
