Switching of items in Contracts/Install Base

We have an Order Type called RAM Advance Exchange where we ship a good item in return of the defective item from the Customer.I have read the items get swapped in Service Contracts/Install Base, for such transactions
 How does this happen?, I know we need to use Installation Details screen and enter data for Source Transaction details and non-source transaction details.

But which Oracle program actually handles the switching in Contracts?  Because if there is Renewal in entered status for that Contract, the program ignores the renewal and switches only for the active one.
