Check amount length

We trying to get a check approved through a canadian bank (who knew the MICRS were that different on Canadian checks vs US checks?!?!) and they are requesting that the amount of the check not have so many astericks at the end to fill in that field. Does any one know of a way, maybe a setting in E1, that will shorten that field. Our last resort is to mod the R04572 and truncate that field. Any suggestions would be great!
