Using Inventory Interface of D

Has anyone been able to use a line type with an inventory interface of "D" with non stock items. My testing suggests not as does most the references I can find. However I did find one article that seems to suggest otherwise.........

The following Article seems to suggest that an item branch record is not required for a line type with an inventory interface of D.
