Chart of Accounts Segment for Projects

Hello:
At my company, we use Projects modules (Costing and Billing) extensively. Our current Char of Accounts has seven segments. One of them is a spare one. We are getting a request from our Accounting team to convert the spare segment and use it as a segment to tracking project related information.

I have the following questions with reference to the above:

1.What are the advantages/dis-advantages of using a segment to track Projects in the GL Chart of Accounts? 
2. Are there any best practices surrounding this usage?
3. Are there other options than using one segment of the CoA for Projects?
