Amount Field Size

Can someone please help me understand the amount field limitaitons for the following types of tables in the Oracle GL?

1. posting transactions (GL_JOURNAL_INTERFACE)

2. balances (GL_BALANCES)

3. average ledger balances 

I understand that the field sizes in the Oracle database can be as large as 38 characters but is there no restriction on the sizes driven from the front end?
