Maintenance downtime in manufacturing org - One Item Master for equipment item and asset group?

Tooling is equipment resource in manufacturing org, and maintained asset in supporting, separate eam org. Is there any way in R12 to use the same item master enabled for both orgs, with one custom item template?  Conversion issue if they need to be different item masters.
