Database Backup and Recovery (MOSC)

Without RMAN

Hi,Got a dumb question here.
Is it possible to perform the following tasks without using RMAN?
1. hot backup
2. incremental backups and restores

I am wondering how DBAs had performed hot backup and incremental backups and restores before RMAN was born.
