Question regarding dba duties

 I understand as a good dba you suppose to participate in the code review and design review. However, I have never been a developer before I became a dba. I kind of want to ask all the expert dbas out there who never had developer experience how they deal with the code review and design review duties. Please advice. Thank you very much.
