defferent between credit memo and debit memo

what is the defferent of credit memo and debit memo,

 if i create a debit or credit memo for supplier how can i appliy it to paricular invoicd,

and

without createing debit memo can i cancel the inovice

then what is the most sutable action  invoice cancelation or creating a debit memo
