Best Practices for upload / download data files to/from E-Business Suite.

Hello,
We currently run 11.5.10.2 on a single tier Solaris box. We're moving to split tier configuration with all application services (including concurrent processing) on a separate server to the DB. 

We currently have various customisations and processes which assume that DB and App have a common file system. However our parent company's security rules prevent file system sharing across production servers (I'm trying to find out more about this restriction and whether we can get around it).

However, what that means is that some of our customisations are broken (e.g. Users upload the file to the app tier file system via Samba shares but custom PL/SQL program can't then see it anymore for processing).
