Disable Asset Key Flexfield (currently enabled and used in past)

We no longer have a need to use the Asset Key flexfield.  When I am trying to disable and change Value Set to None, we are getting an error in the Asset addition window.  Hoe can i disable to flexfield so the field is not requried and no error message appears?
