incorrect serial number in install base

Does anyone know if the install base serial number can be corrected?  The serial number came from the completion of a discrete job and the user entered in v.  The correct serial number should be PD1288.  In the past we have expired the instance, and then manually created it with the correct information but then the tie to the sales order is lost.
