How do I enable "Open in New Window / Screen" for Accounts / Contacts etc in Action Bar?

When we right click on an item in the Action Bar on the left side of the screen, Options appear for "Open in New Window" and "Open in New Screen".  However, as you can see from the attachment, these options are greyed out / disabled.

Any ideas on how to enable them?

(We are using IE 9 which seems to work just find for most functionality hpwever it is obviously not one of the supported browsers.)
