What is the better approach? (FILTER vs. COUNT OF ID)

I have generally noticed that when I use FILTER.....USING on metrics fields the report runs awefully slow when compared to using the ID and doing a COUNT in the pivot table. I was hoping to get a opinion on this and any other better alternate solutions.
