Siebel audit log decoding

We upgraded from 7.5.3.17 to 8.1.1.3 and found that Audit Log data has been encoded and stored into one column. We are not able to get field, old_val and new_val columns as we have before. Oracle has a one pager that says to use the VBC. Has anyone been able to use the VBC Audit Trail Item 2 to decode the Audit Trail Item table and store the decoded data into a new table so that it can be used for reporting as before upgrade? We can't find any real steps to implement or to get us started on how
