intermittent REP-51002 error

We've recently started getting intermittent REP-51002 errors when trying to run reports - there haven't been any network or environment changes that we're aware of. (* EDIT - obviously this is being run via a AS reports server which is why I'm posting it in this forum, but please let me know if you think it would be more appropriate to post it elsewhere).

There are various posts around suggesting possible causes but most seem to be for errors that happen consistently.  What is the most likely cause for intermittent errors?

Any pointers gratefully received.
