Histograms -- How/when to use histograms?

Hello Gurus,
Good morning !! I would like to know how/when to use the histograms.

1. Would like to know is it worth using it?
2. Will the collection of histograms hamper the db performance?


Any documentation/scenarios to follow please let me know.
