etext format adding custom sort

I have a etext file that I'm trying to add a custom sort to.  The sort isn't working and I haven't found any good examples of how to set it up correctly.  Does anyone have a sample etext format with a custom sort?  I have a header record, check record, multiple stub records per check record and a trailer record.
