How to automate the launching of the journal approval process

We are trying to take advantage of the General Ledger Journal Approval process.

When the journals are created either manually or imported, the journals have to be opened and the 'Approval' button launched for the journals to follow the hierarchy of approval.

How can this be automated so that (for imported or system generated journals) the 'Approval' button can be launched automatically without having to open up the journals?
