Physical standby in maximum protection mode

Hi Gurus,

I need your help in giving solution to my customer.My requirement is as below.

1> I've physical standby configured in maximum protection mode.

2> The database version is 11g.

3> My production server had some os/storage level failure.

4> The option with me is to activate the standby.

5> Would like to know if I do failover of my standby which will become current primary.Is there need to recreate the standby from scratch.

6> Is there any way to recover the former primary database which was unavialable and become available after a day so.

My concern is my database size is around 20TB and backing the database for standby recreation is not very easy task.
