Alert log no longer updating

So maybe it's full?  I made a backup, delete the original alert.  Issue 'backup controlfile to trace' command.  alert log still not generating.
Ran show alert from adrci and show updated alert log.  Where is my alert log?  I'm looking at correct diagnostic_dest.  Nothing has changed.  any ideas?
