How to improve email campaigns

I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions or best practices how to improve email campaigns.  We have launched multiples email campaigns through ODM and have not seen good engagement from customers.  We need to improve the process to better engage our customers by tweaking our emails. Find ways that will capture their attention.  If anyone has information that you could pass my way, I would appreciate.  I've read many white papers from various marketing companies but if there is one that really stands out, please forward.
