Step aborted because agent went down but I see no sign of agent being down

We are running oracle enterprise manager 10g release 4 grid control (10.2.0.4.0) and have a job that runs nightly which basically just runs a windows batch job to copy files from one server to another.

Last night the the copy failed and the only error I see so far is in the job log on the oem job status screen:

Step aborted because agent went down

When I ck the agent (source server and destination) history status it says they have been up for the last 24 hours.
I also checked the event viewers and no issues.  
any idea what may cause the agent to go down without any sign anywhere of it happening?
