cancel line on approved requistion results in "adjust reserve" message

Requistion was approved June 5 ND CHANGES MADE ON jUNE 13 ON ONE LINE.  cANCELLED 1.4 OF 1.6 CASE QUANTITY RESULTING IN ERROR MESSAGE OF "ADJUST RESERVED". cOULD THIS BECAUSE HE DID NOT CHECK "UNRESERVE ENCUMBRANCE" MAYBE WHEN CANCELLING THE LINE OR IS IT BECAUSE THE AMOUNT CANCELLED IS THE LESS THAN AMOUNT ORDERED? pLEASE HELP OBI WAN.
