To use Oracle ASM with new 11.2.0.1 Oracle DB Install?

Question:

I have not used Oracle's ASM feature so far in my 10 + years of Oracle Database Administration.  And still am not convinced I need it for this latest

11.2.0.1 install on windows 2008 r2 64 bit server. 

The below specs are so far about all I have from the vendor on what they require for their db setup:

Oracle 11g database server

Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit

Oracle Standard/Enterprise, Version 11.2.0.1 Database

Oracle text 11.2.0.1 must be selected during Oracle Server Version 11.2.0.1 installation

Tablespace auto-extended ON for the Argus 6.0.5 database (argdev)

Argus Database Characterset:  AL32UTF8

Argus Database Semantics : CHAR

Following components are installed on the Argus db instance
