Unclicking Track in Installed base once item history is present

Looking at a situation where I need to unclick the attribute track in install base in item master for about 160 items I would not like to have to recreate. We already have had on hand history but in the future these items are being used in WIP and CApitalized and must not be tracked in install base. Any ideas /patches/ fixes that might help us get to where we need to go or is it looking like the quickest option would be to just create the 160+ items again?
