Impairment and Life Change in Same Period

I am trying to do an impairment of an asset and also update its useful life in the samer period in R12.1.3 Assets.  When I try this it tells me I cannot update the life for an asset that has been impaired in the current period.  If I try to update the life first, the amount of the impairment exceeds the NBV so it throws an error.  Any ideas?
