Manufacturer part number field in Item List of Values on Material requirements of eAM Work order pag

Hi, 
Can some one throw some light on the significance of manufacturer part number field displayed while searching for item number on eAM work order > Material requirements block.?

Ex: If we have two manufacturer part numbers for a item X and if i choose a wrong manufactuer part number, Technically what is the problem ??

Actually we are exploring a possibility to remove the cross reference and manufacturer part number column from the Item LOV so that each item will have one record shown on the LOV.  So i need your thoughts..
