Account Contact Page Layout

How do I update the Account Contact Page Layout?  I found in the Account Application Custimization section where I can create a layout and in the User Role where I can assign the layout, but the newly assigned Account Contact Page Layout hasn't changed from the system default page (only displaying the Contact lookup & a Customer Role).  Am I supposed to enable something else?
