Pick Applet in product Configurator for a Component Product Relationship

On version 8.1.1.X application is it possible to configure a pick applet in the product configurator User interface to select a component product in a relationship. The vanilla web templates for the product relationships only includes a check box, combo box and radio buttons.

This requirement is similar to the existing pick applet that can be configured with properties for an attribute in product configurator. This was previously recorded as an enhancement request for relationships in Bug 10449404 and Bug 10470661 and Doc Id 794263.1 but the enhancement was not implemented.

 

It is possible to configure this with changes to the configurator UI web templates and javascript files or it there a fundantal reason why it is not feasible to do this?
