Special Information Types (SIT) on the Person Record

We heard a rumor a couple of years ago that Oracle was moving away from Special Information Types and was discouraging the use of them.  We understood that Oracle was migrating more towards the use of Extra Information Types (EIT) on the Person Form and Assignment form.  Other than that we have not heard anything concrete or heard anything official from Oracle.  Can anyone provide anything information on that.  As we continue to implement new countries and new businesses we continue to create new SITs but we don't want to put ourselves in a position of needing to move data
