Controlling Open Period LOV

In R12 on the Open and Close Periods form, a user is able to select any period name when opening a new GL period.  In 11i, you were limited to opening the next GL period.  Has anyone come up with a way to limit the opening to 1 period in R12 through the Open and Close Periods form?  If so, please share.
