Using PDF templates with Standalone BIP version Oracle BI Publisher 10.1.3.4.2 (build:1323)

I am having difficulty finding information about using PDF templates with BIP.  Is it possible to use BI Publisher syntax with PDF templates as is possible with RTF template?.  For example, can you use syntax such as <?for-each:name?> with a PDF template?  I've tried it and am getting errors.

I have a PDF template for which I want to process multiple XML record sets but haven't been able to figure out how to iterate through the record sets, such that I get a new pdf form populated for each record set.

If anyone can point me in the rght direction, I would appreciate it.
