How to troubleshoot missing alert logs?

OEM 10g, the database alert logs are not found / will not display within the GUI.  We mostly use customized paths for the DUMP folders, so I suspect it's a simple configuration question -- but I prefer to not break things.  Please help steer me to the documentation and/or examples of how to triage this.
