How to purge MTL_MATERIAL_TRANSACTOINS table

Hi,
 MTL_MATERIAL_TRANSACTOINS table getting huge, millions of lines in the table now, We are running Oracle E-Business Suite R12.0.6 since 4 years, due to millions of records in the table we have issue related to performance, please advice is it possible to purge this table and should not effect any transactions and report.
