R12 Upgrade data volume

Hello,
We are in a process of estimating R12 Upgrade , I came to know that by default upgrade will consider 6 months data .. can we increase it to 12 or 24 months ?

how much simple the process is ? is it a option during upgrade or we need to change any scripts ?
