How does RMAN know about a backup that has been backed up to tape by TSM (not rman)

I am having a brain freeze.  I am keeping two RMAN backups to disk.   TSM backs up that disk to tape at night. My RMAN retention policy is set to 2.  If I need to restore/recover to last week (backup is no longer on disk), I know I need to restore the backup from tape back to the disk location, but how will RMAN know about this backup when I specify a PITR point that is back from last week?  Is it because the information is stored in the control files?
