Adding a custom dimension to an existing 11.1.2.2. application

Dear colleagues,
I have been trying out the new version 11.1.2.2. with an existing application created in an older version. Since there are now unlimited amount of custom dimensions available, I got exited and have been trying to add a custom dimension into this application. Hasn't been successful, though. I didn't find any direct implication on this topic in the manuals. Could you please help me on this? Is it even possible to add Custom dimensions to an existing application?
