How do I setup explicit asset versioning?

The admin documentation for Fatwire CS 7.6 (and Oracle 11g) on page 424 talk about the CS supporting both implicit and explicit versioning.
However, it does not detail how to specify versioning to be explicit.  It appears as thou it is implicit by default.

'When revision tracking is on for an asset type, Content Server provides both implicit (or 
automatic) and explicit (or manual) checkout/checkin functionality'
