Accruals - for service/time-based items

I wondered if anyone had any experience of creating accruals someway other than by Receipt?

We have lots of service type contract POs that we accrue against - currently we extract data to Excel and do calculations there to determine the accrual amounts.  I am unaware of any standard functionality that would deliver this but wondered if anyone had done anything 'creative' using PO/AP functionality that might help.

All ideas will be gratefully received!
