2 Step Upgrade Path

Is the following a viable upgrade path:

7.7.2.12 SEA to 7.8.2 SEA and then from 7.8.2 SEA to 8.1.1.3 SIA?

We are trying to determine the best upgrade path.  If this is a viable upgrade path, are there any pros or cons to do this versus going from 7.7.2.12 SEA to 8.1.1.0 SEA and then to 8.1.1.0 SEA to 8.1.1.0 SIA and patch?
