GC Algorithm

I would like to ask what's the advisable GC algorithm to be used in Oracle Webcenter Spaces that has an independent monitoring hitting or refreshing a page every five seconds. In my current setup it is verbose. My problem is that JVM is getting low as time passes by to the extent that it fails because of JVM out of memory (this is observed as there is no one connecting to the spaces, just the monitoring tool).
I would like to know if there is a way to stabilize JVM even there is a monitoring tool that refreshes a page every five seconds?
