SyncSort backups on NetApp for data guard environments

Hi,
We're attempting to perform SyncSort backups on NetApp against a primary database in an active data guard environment, and discovered it doesn't work.  We contacted SyncSort and found  backups of data guard environments are not supported. 

Has anyone gotten this to work for them?  Has anyone created a workaround?  Does anyone have a suggestion for another method of creating a DR solution if I must use SyncSort to perform backups?
