ASM Access Security Required for 3rd Party Applications

Oracle DBA Colleagues,

To date, the only Applications running in our Oracle RAC Clusters has been Oracle Clusterware and Oracle Databases(DBA likes this). :-)   A new Opportunity has arisen to install a 3rd Party Data Replication Tool that will need to physically access the archived and online redo logs under ASM management.  The install document from the 3rd party states that it required SYSASM access to enable the file access.  Do you know if SYSASM access is the only option for a 3rd party applicaton to access files under ASM Management??  Is there a good doc/link somewhere that discusses exact access for access
