Release 20 - Search layout changes

I am struggling with the new 'smart associations' for searching in Release 20.

From the release guide:CRM On Demand provides powerful list management functionality that allows you to create lists of records based on specified criteria. Smart Associations are even more flexible and powerful in Release 20, allowing you to further refine search results using the robust criteria of managed lists. In the lookup window, you can select from both prebuilt lists or custom lists for the record type.

Here's my issue: 

I have finally got the 'default' list to appear.

When the user types in a value the error comes back with 'An exact match could not be found. Please select an appropriate record or cancel request.
