Creating a new Prorate Calendar

Creating a new tax book.  Using prior tax books as a guide.  Wonering why I would need to have a prorate calendar that has 24 periods.  Each epriod splits each month in half.  Is this best practice?  Is a 12 period prorate calendar an issue?  Thanks in advance
